Chief Medical Officer Married 3 1996

After finishing residency I went to Japan for what I thought would be one year of getting experience in clinical development with an international pharmaceutical company while keeping up with clinical urology through friends at Japan’s National Cancer Center hospital. I found I enjoyed the complete process of clinical development from drug discovery through post-marketing and working internationally on drug registrations and pharmacovigilance and have now spent almost 21 years working for Eisai Co., Ltd. in Tokyo, currently as Chief Medical Officer and a Senior Vice President. My work is mostly in the areas of drug safety (pharmacovigilance) and risk management during clinical development and marketing and I teach at several universities in Japan, Asia and Europe on those topics in addition to serving on expert working groups for the WHO’s CIOMS organization, and international advisory committees as well as editorial boards for journals and publications on pharmaceutical medicine. My wife Anna and I have three boys.

In 1987 Eric Strauss offered me my dream job, and I've never left. I have enjoyed a rewarding 30 years (so far) at Palo Alto Medical Foundation.  When I first joined Eric it was just the 2 of us.  The department is now six strong, including Stanford alums Keith Lee, Raj Shinghal, and Simon Kimm.
